Songkran Facts

Songkran is a Thai festival that celebrates New Year’s Day and this year starts on the 13th April. As of 2018, the Thai government extended the celebrations from the traditional three days to five days. Here’s some more facts about Songkran.


Week long water fights can occur
A key part of the Songkran celebrations are the water fights. The throwing of water has traditionally been a sign of respect and to wash away bad luck as you enter into the New Year. As tourism picks up over this period, people from all over the world join in on the fun and have water fights which have been known go on for as long as a week.


People have reportedly gotten hurt during the Songkran period
With all the activities that take place over a celebration period, such as Christmas and Chinese New Year, it is easy for people to become overenthusiastic and get caught up in the magic of the holidays. Unfortunately, in Thailand Songkran celebrations has led to a number of car accidents. During Songkran, on average 3,500 people get injured from a car related accident, with this number nearly reaching the 4,000 mark in 2018.


Symbols change depending on what day Songkran falls on

The God, Kabillaprom had seven daughters, who had to sacrifice their father when he lost a challenge to local child, Thammabal. Every year, one of Kabillaprom’s daughters would take turns to lead a procession in remembrance of their father. As the day that Songkran falls on changes, each day of the week is dedicated to one of the seven daughters. Mahodharā Devi (aka Mahothon Thewi), will be the daughter focused on this year, as Songkran falls on a Saturday in 2019. The symbols for a Saturday Songkran includes: Hyacinth flowers, blue sapphire, hood deer meat, a discus, a trident and a peacock.
