Burns Night is celebrated throughout Scotland, annually on the 25th January. On this day, people pay tribute to Poet and leader of the romanticism movement, Robert Burns (1759 – 1796). Here are some interesting facts about Scotland’s most famous person.

Robert Burns wrote “Auld Lang Syne”

The song is sung in most parts of the world on New Years. However, few people know the full lyrics and even fewer people know its origin. This classic song was written as a poem by Robert Burns in 1788 and is sung as a symbol to bid farewell to the old year at the stroke of midnight, on New Year's Eve (or Hogmanay).

Robert Burns’ home is a museum

If you want to take a step back into history and find out more about Robert Burns, why not visit his home? The Burns Cottage, located in Alloway, Ayr spent most of the 19th century as a private residence for rent and an alehouse, before being restored by the Alloway Burns Monument Trust, in 1881.

He won a TV competition

Despite televisions being invented over 130 years after his death, Robert Burns can add reality TV competition winner to his resume. In 2009, STV ran a television series in which the Scottish public voted on who was "The greatest Scot" of all time. Robert Burns won, narrowly beating out William Wallace.

He was just as famous outside of Scotland

Aside from being famous across the UK, Burns’ legacy reached other parts for the world too. The Soviet Union was first to honour Burns, with a commemorative stamp, for the 160th anniversary of his death, in 1956. In Canada, they also celebrate Burns Night- known as Robbie Burns Day.
