Celebrating the Chinese Mid-Autumn Moon Festival

According to the Chinese Lunar calendar, the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month. In the Gregorian calendar, it falls on October 4th. The Chinese Mid-Autumn Moon Festival takes its name from the moon at this time of year, as this is when it is at its roundest and brightest. The festival is widely celebrated in mainland China, where workers will enjoy one day off for the festival.

History

The Chinese Mid-Autumn Moon Festival is inherited from moon sacrificial ceremonies. In ancient China, people observed the movement of the moon and how it closely related to the changes of the seasons and the agricultural production. The festival allowed them to express thanks to the moon and celebrate the harvest.

The festival dates back as far as 1046 BC, when it was celebrated by the royal class on the autumnal equinox. At this time however, it has no festival background at all, until around 618 AD when social prosperity inspired the custom of festivities.

On the festival day, people gather with their families to offer sacrifice to the moon as well as appreciate the brightness, eat moon cake and express yearnings towards their family members and friends who live afar. There are other customs that take place at the festival, including lanterns and dragon/ lion dances.
